Before Christmas I started a newly created role of Rugby Development Officer at TWRFC. My mission was to go out into the school community and spread the word about all the benefits the game can bring, both on and off the field.
It’s been a whirlwind few months, and the response from the community has been nothing short of amazing. I want to share some details on what’s already been achieved.
So far, I’ve worked with eight schools (a mix of primary and secondary) and engaged with over 300 students. My mission has been to bring rugby to as many young people as possible, and it’s been fantastic to see so many kids getting stuck in, trying something new, and enjoying the game.
A Big Push for Girls’ Rugby
One of my main goals was to grow girls’ rugby and the progress so far has been very encouraging. I’m currently running three girls-only rugby clubs in schools, and the feedback has been fantastic. Seeing the confidence and enthusiasm of the girls in these sessions has been one of the highlights of the job so far. It’s clear there’s a real appetite for the game, and I can’t wait to build on this momentum.
Rugby Reading: Changing the Game for Reluctant Readers
Another initiative I’m particularly proud of is Rugby Reading. This program is all about using rugby to help reluctant readers develop their confidence and skills. Working closely with schools, I’ve had the chance to support students through rugby-themed reading activities, and the results have been amazing. Teachers have shared some brilliant success stories, and it’s been rewarding to see how this program is making a difference. I’m excited to grow Rugby Reading even further in the next school year!
