Match report from Nick van O & Stu Monty
The game began under cold conditions, with a greasy pitch but little wind. TW played uphill in the first half and kicked off to W, quickly transitioning into an intense battle for control. Early on, both teams exchanged possession in midfield, with TW showing promise in the scrum and lineouts.
W opened the scoring with a penalty after some scrappy play from both sides, putting them ahead 3-0. Possession was shared for the next 10 minutes and the slope of the pitch dictated where the game was being played. After being pinned into the TW 22, W played through multiple phases to score just 10 meters from the posts . However the kicker missed an easy conversion 8-0. TW responded with strong play in the breakdown and a powerful set piece that secured a penalty from a scrum infringement just on the W 22, Jack made no mistake to make it 8-3 after 30 minutes.
TW continued to press straight from the restart with good handling and strong runs from Whale, Purnell, Smith and Ticehurst forcing a scrum deep in W half. Pressure remained on W and from a lineout just 10 meters out a well-executed lineout and subsequent phases saw Whale go over for TW’s first try. A successful conversion by Jack Greig made it 8-10 to TW after 34 minutes.
As the first half continued, W mounted pressure but missed a couple of crucial kicks. Solid defensive work and turnovers by TW kept the hosts at bay to keep the narrow half time lead.
In the second half TW capitalized on a slight downhill momentum. Despite some handling errors, the team showed grit, with Docco and Thompson making vital contributions. Thompson’s try, followed by another from Jay after multiple phases, extended TW’s lead to 8-24. Jack's reliable kicking added the extras.
The game concluded with TW holding strong despite injuries and fatigue, securing a well-earned 15-24 victory.
This performance highlighted TW's resilience, dominance in set pieces, and clinical finishing when opportunities arose.
