TWRFC 7s Team Plate Winners in Regional Finals

TW 7s Team

Tunbridge Wells RFC 7’s team travelled to a 30 degree Ealing Trailfinders on Saturday to contest Regional finals and represent Kent as the winners of the County Competition in the RFU’s 24-7’s Competition. Mav Anderson the Manager of the side had – like some others – found it difficult to get a squad out given the timing and the weather. However, a good quality side of 10 travelled made up of club stalwarts and former players.

Wells found a 9 00 am start on the schedule against England Universities and could have done with this game once they had settled down ultimately losing 25-5 but drawing the second half 5-5. England Universities went on to win the competition and progress to the National finals at the Bath Rec in August. Wells improving as they went narrowly lost to Badgers, a guest 7, 26-19 and then ran out comfortable winners against the Wolves 7 25-10 in the final group game. This put the only town side competing into the Plate final where they came home with the medal beating the Los Pelicanos team 25-10.

As the day progressed so did the teams cohesion with Conor Ward, Max Douch, and James Lineham putting in the tackles and giving a strong defence with George Montgomery being the playmaker and providing many opportunities to break. Skipper Mike Doherty, Max Douch and Matt Spicer provided pace and finishing skills and Ben Hunter gave the squad options, making some great tackles and allowing Maverick to rotate the team in the searing heat.  Jordan Earle adding further firepower in the last game to add  attacking options.

Squad: Mike Doherty, James Lineham, George Montgomery,  Josh Charles, Matt Spicer, Joshua Rice, Max Douch, Fionn McLoughlin, Conor Ward, Josh Charles, Ben Hunter, Jordan Earle. Manager and Coach Mav Anderson.
